MaremmaWine-Maremma+Tuscany+Wine+Routes

Today we guide you through the “Strada del Vino e dei Sapori Colli di Maremma”, i.e. the Route of Wine and Flavors of the Maremma Hills, located in south-eastern Tuscany. Not only it is one of Italy’s longest wine trails, it also offers most options and opportunities: from the sea to the hills to Mount Amiata, the territory is full of history and traditions for an authentic travel and foodie experience.

Local wines include the whites Bianco di Pitigliano, Montecucco Vermentino and Ansonica Costa dell’Argentario, and the reds Sovana Rosso Superiore and Capalbio Sangiovese, all of which have the DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) quality label. Most famous is the Morellino di Scansano with the  DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin) quality assurance label. Maremma’s wines are recognized even abroad, for example by the Vinitaly Club UK whose selection includes wines classified as Maremma Toscana DOC and Vermentino IGT.

Here are three interesting and mouth-watering routes that cannot be missed along the Maremma Hills:

The Route of Flavors, Aromas and Charm (Il percorso dei sapori, dei profumi, dell’incanto)

Rolling through Magliano in Toscana, Scansano, Campagnatico, Roccalbegna, Manciano and Semproniano, the area is marked by the hilly countryside dotted with ancient castles and is at the heart of Maremma’s ancient traditions. Local foodie delights include: Morellino di Scansano, extra virgin olive oil and cheeses. When around the area, visit the charming Tenuta Marsiliana, owned by the princely Corsini family. Local foodie delights include: Orbetello bottarga fish; Maremma meat; extra virgin olive oil.

Local foodie delights include: Sorano’s white bean, Pitigliano’s white wine and ‘sfratto’ dessert, Sovana’s red wine.
